All travelers headed to the Bahamas aboard a cruise ship must provide proof of citizenship and identity before boarding the ship or exploring the Bahamian islands. The exact documentation requirements vary by the type of cruise you are taking and your cruise line. In addition, children traveling without both parents might be required to provide additional documentation.
Closed Loop Cruise
Proper documentation for travelers aboard a closed loop cruise -- one that is departing and returning to the same port in the United States -- includes a government-issued I.D., such as a driver's license, and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. A passport book or card serve as proof of identity and citizenship. Though a passport book is not required for closed loop cruise travel, cruise passengers might want to carry one in case of an emergency, as it is the only document granting re-entry to the United States by air.
Other Cruises
Cruisers aboard ships that do not leave and return to the same American port must have a valid U.S. passport book or passport card while on their trip. A visa might be required if the cruise stops at other countries as part of its itinerary, and information on obtaining a visa should be provided by the cruise line. Travelers taking a one-way cruise to the Bahamas will need a passport book to return to the United States by air.
Unaccompanied Minors
Children traveling without both parents should be accompanied by a letter noting the absent parent's approval of the trip. The note should include permission for the child to travel with the adult guardians and explicitly grant permission for the trip, notes the United States Customs and Border Protection website. Some cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, require the note to be notarized and include permission for the adult accompanying the child to seek medical treatment for her if necessary. Children traveling with a single parent with sole custody also should be accompanied by appropriate documentation, such as a court order granting sole custody.
Other Documents
Each cruise line has its own ticketing and cruise registration process, with most documentation requirements being completed online in advance of the sailing. Check with your cruise line for its documentation requirements. Pregnant women are restricted from cruise travel during the later stages of pregnancy, with each cruise line having its own cut-off date, usually 24 weeks. Pregnant women might need to present a doctor's note stating that they are fit to travel and their due date before being allowed to board the ship.
